Museum of the Marengo battle. |
Marengo
is an ancient Suburb at the cross-road of great lines of
communications (from Liguria to north and through the Po
Valley) whose importance was considerable since the old times;
it is important because of the Roman discoveries (the so said
Treasure of Marengo and silver devotional objects dedicated to
Lucio Vero the Emperor, 161-169 d.C., today at the Museo di
Antichità of Turin are some examples) and various signs of a
Lombard Curtis Regia, then free between 688 and 938 d.C.; a
reworked tower and traces of the town-walls still remain. |

The
Aquarium of Genoa, the first in Europe and one of the biggest
in the world is among the most prestigious cultural set up in

visitors a year. More than 6000 animals of 600 different

legends handed on about the fortress let us suppose the
existence of a fort or, at least, of a fortress since the
pre-Roman times or, more certainly, Roman. In consideration of
the strategic position of the place, you could suppose that
there stood a castle on the top of the Gavi rock, as a Roman
garrison along Via Postumia, the old road that leaded from
Genoa to the Monferrato and Lombardia going through Gavi. With
the Goth and Lombard invasions, part of the Ligurian
territory, along with Gavi, passed from the feudal patrimony
to the Church one. |
