The
fantastic 1949: the year of wonders. |
|
 |
 |
| The
1949 is the year of miracles for Coppi. An endless series of victories
with his opponents left behind, routed. Then, there began the usual ride
of the "Sanremo". After having reached Fachleitner on the Berta,
he went on alone towards the victory. |
Then,
the success in the "Giro della Romagna" and a triumphal "Giro
d'Italia" immediately afterwards. That year the Tour knew new
difficulties in the French Alps: in the Cuneo-Pinerolo stage (Leoni was in
pink), Coppi (in the photo above on the top of the Izoard), inflicted a
lead of 10' on Bartali and 20' on the others. |

 |
| The
Tour, after the misfortunes of the St. Malò stage in which Coppi suffered
a serious breakdown because of a car accident, was a new triumph for him.
On the Alps (photo above), Coppi controlled the Briancon stage along with
Bartali, getting the yellow jersey in Aosta. |
In
the World Championship the flat run of Copenaghen favoured Van Steenbergen
but Coppi got the rainbow jersey in the pursuit (photo above). |
 |
|
| After
the victory in the "Giro del Veneto", Coppi finished his season
with a new victory in the "Giro Lombardia" (photo above). The
victory in the Challange Desgrange-Colombo and the Italian Master title of
the road-racing cyclists emphasised the wonderful year of the "Campionissimo"
(1949). |
